Same way a computer will compress and zip a file. When we try to recall an event its not always fully there in our memory because our brains have to take time to uncompresse the images. this is why an image for an experience may be happy looking to me or you but angry to the person it came from. One beautiful theory of consciousness I heard at a neuroscience lecture is that of an symphony orchestra, ie the perception[music] transcends its component parts [instruments] ie similar to emergence theories.
